He sold his treasured comic books for her nude portraits.
Karla had quietly slipped some of his favourite comic books out of the house. They were still sealed in their protective clear sleeves. Some were very old, with single- and double-digit issue numbers. They were valuable, carefully protected treasures.
And now they were props for her boudoir and nude photography session.
She was pretty excited about the idea.
“You said to bring something that means a lot to him,” Karla explained. “He has been collecting these since he was a kid. He loves them, so we have to be careful.”
We were so careful.

The Props He Would Instantly Recognize
My own childhood was filled with comic books. I was a kid of the 1960s, so I understood the fascination and how emotionally attached a collector can become to particular issues.
Karla also brought along some duplicates that were not in protective sleeves. Those she could safely hold and play with during the session. The valuable ones stayed inside their sleeves.
One of Pete’s favourite portraits would become an image of Karla sitting cross-legged in a corset, looking up into my camera. His comic books were fanned out around her.
It was playful, personal and entirely hers.
More importantly, Pete would immediately understand what she had created for him.
The Viewing Changed Everything
Karla brought Pete to her viewing appointment.
He was blown away by her portraits, far more than she had expected. He chose a couple of wall prints, including one very large one, along with a portrait book.
Eventually, we narrowed everything down to the collection he loved most.
Karla studied our price list. Then she turned to him.
“I love these, but my budget won’t cover it.”
Pete asked to see the price list. She had not planned to share the cost with him, but she handed it over.
“And this totals to…?” he asked.
I gave him the total.
He looked down at the price list and sighed.
Then he became very quiet.
Karla and I sat watching him, equally quiet. He was clearly working something out in his head.
Suddenly, he perked up.
“Give me a moment. I’ll be right back.”
He leapt out of his chair and went outside, leaving Karla and me staring at each other in bewilderment.
She shook her head. She had no idea what he was doing.
After a while, Pete came back into the room wearing a huge grin. He dropped into his chair and turned to Karla.
“You like all of these?” he asked, gesturing towards the screen where the complete collection was displayed.
She nodded and started to answer.
“We’ll take it all,” he announced. “The book and the wall prints.”
Karla looked completely bewildered.
“How?”
Pete grinned again.
“Easy. I sold two Thors, a Spidey, one Fantastic Four and an X-Men.”
“To cover this?” she asked. “You like them that much?”
She was stunned that he would give up some of his treasured comic books for her portraits.
“Easy,” he said. “These have way more value than those. These are the real treasures.”
Then Pete turned to me.
“Can we go through them again? I love these.”
She Saw Herself Through His Eyes
A few days later, Karla dropped by the studio.
She still carried the warmth of the viewing, the session and the whole experience.
As we talked on the couch, she told me how surprised she had been by what Pete did. During that viewing, she realized just how deeply he loved her and how high a pedestal she stood on in his eyes.
“I would never have asked him to do that,” she said. “It was entirely his idea. He did it without even thinking about it.
“You have no idea how that moment made me feel. It was incredible. It was such a precious moment.
“Thank you.”
Why Meaningful Props Matter in Boudoir Photography
Personal props in a boudoir or nude photography session can carry far more emotional weight than their physical value suggests. They connect the portraits to a relationship, a memory or a private part of someone’s story.
After more than 46 years of photographing women, I have learned that the most meaningful props are rarely chosen simply because they look good in a photograph. They matter because of what they represent.
Karla brought Pete’s treasures into her session.
In the end, Pete showed her where he believed the real treasure was.
