When Less is More – on so many levels

When Less is More – on so many levels

When Less Is More.

Being a boudoir / nude photographer for over 40 years, I have found that the less a woman wears, the more she can express her authentic self.

There is another side to the “less is more” statement. Professional boudoir photographers design their shots. Volume is not as crucial as getting the image. That powerful image.

Now volume does help with getting that one lucky shot. I like to set up the opportunity for that perfect shot.

That was reinforced recently.

A client marvelled that I only took 140 images in her nude / boudoir photo session. She was thrilled with 110, then had a hard time getting them down to the top 33 that she loved the most for her book.

She was amazed because, at her first boudoir session (these nudes were a big step out of her comfort zone), the photographer took 1500 images, of which she only liked three.

I brought in light shapers picked for her body shape and skin color. We built settings for her to pose in; that matched deeply what her soul needed. I guided her into natural poses that showcased her best features and her personality, her natural way of physically expressing herself.

So, for her, less was more, both in how little she wore, well, actually in the nothing she wore to the less is more photography approach. The results were so powerful.

A lot of women are not aware of how they physically express themselves. In their youth, they would have experimented with postures and facial expressions, subconsciously noting for repeating those getting the desired results.

It probably started in childhood; kids are so crafty.

By the time a person hits their thirties, and up, they have their set of body expressions internalized.

I watch for that, then quickly refine, and tweak the pose. They are naturally posed but with polish.

Women find the process amazingly fluid; they hardly notice yet are grateful for the adjustment.

A woman’s pose for a boudoir or nude photography session needs to look natural like she just casually stepped into place. Her body language needs to match her face and expression.

I use conversation to emotionally guide my clients into the expressions I need. What follows is body language that matches.

This is why it is essential that a woman feel safe during her session. A lot of barriers drop when she feels protected and sheltered. That she can express herself with no judgement from the camera.

Her images become very authentic. It makes these subtle differences that resonate with the viewer.

Is This To Much Effort?

This may seem like a lot of work to put into a boudoir or nude photography session. Yet even here in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, it is worth the effort.

It is not expected for her image to sell millions of dollars of products in advertising to be seen by millions. So most photographers reason, we can be quicker, go for the popular generic poses.

Luxury Experience is Golden

We offer a luxury experience that results in highly personal, timeless images. How the images are created and how she felt about them; is as important as the final result.

How a woman feels about how the images were taken, what emotional context she attaches to her images is as important as the quality of the final image.

To allow her feelings to bloom, I like to take my time. Our sessions are pretty relaxed affairs, unlike my client’s first photographer, who took 1500 images in a short time. I will take 140 photos over 4 hours.

I don’t do photography constantly; there are set changes, lighting changes, posing time, outfit changes (sometimes), and conversations. Still, an organic flow happens, a rhythm that goes with the mood.

The result is a luxurious flow of photography. You might say it is the Inner Spirit Photography way.
